The default setting in W10 is for USB memory sticks not to use buffered writes so, unless the user has changed the setting, file are directly written to USB devices without being buffered. If the PC crashes during this period, the file does not get written to disk and is lost.Īlthough I have been unable to cause it to occur by repeated testing it could also happen if the file is written to a USB memory stick and the stick is ejected before the file has been written, or if the PC crashes before the buffer is flushed. AOO has correctly written the file to the buffer but there can be a delay of five seconds before the buffer is flushed to disk. I now believe that files full of nulls (which Writer displays as #) occur when the PC crashes or hangs during the time the file is being written and consequently the buffer does not get flushed to disk so the file does not get written.
